Theology Paper Essays - Religion, Christianity, Deities,
The Truth Of The Bible Skyler Coryell A lot of people always say trust in the bible and god will lead the way. If you believe in the bible then you are doing it right and the bible is always right and is always true. But is that actually the case? Is the bible always as true as some people say and is it always the thing to look at when wondering what happened in the past? I believe the bible is true, but some people don't due to some of the things that are within the bible. Some of the things that are within the bible that make people believe the bible isn't true is that there are multiple birth stories, Luke Timothy Johnson shows us a different meaning of the truth and shows us why the bible is true, and I explain why I believe the bible is true in my opinion based off of the gospels and this article. In the gospels of Matthew and Luke they discuss the birth story of Jesus. Also within the these two gospels both of the birth stories are different but also have similarities. This is a big reason why some people believe that the bible isn't true. This bring the question of "if they can't get the same birth story what else is different and which one is actually real?" There are a lot of differences within the birth stories bu I think the biggest one is the location of the birth. In the gospel of Luke the location of conception is in Nazareth while the location of conception in the gospel of Matthew is in Bethlehem. This can confuse people and can get people mixed up with where Jesus was actually conceived and where he is from. This isn't the only difference that are in this birth story. Another big one is the killing of the innocents and the trip to Egypt. In the gospel of Matthew they do murder the innocents and make a trip to Egypt and in the gospel in Luke they do not murder the innocents and do not go to Egypt. A lot of people look at these two details very close and use these two details to make their argument that the bible is not true. " It seems an obvious thing to say that Christians read the Bible in order to search for truth; that we do not read these ancient texts simply as a source of arcane information, but because they have something to do with the truth of our lives"(Luke Timothy Johnson). This is a quote in the article How Is The Bible True? In this article he looks at a different ways on how the bible is true and how people see the bible being true. One of his ways of looking at the truth of the bible is looking for the truth in the past. He tells that the bible sometimes gets history wrong, but that doesn't mean that the bible isn't true. Not everyone can know what happened back then especially if they weren't there. He says you can't look for the truth in the future, he says this because you can't predict the future. Predicting the future is pretty hard and almost impossible, you have to get lucky to say something and then be right. You can also never prove the future wrong, you can be wrong and then continue to say that you said the wrong thing and keep making it up. He also says "One can have the truth about Jesus, but only at the cost of the truth of the gospels"(Luke Timothy Johnson). This quote shows that we would have to give up the truth within the gospels to figure out the truth of Jesus because it is hard to get both. I believe the bible is true and I believe you can't really question it. Yes there are some things that can be questioned but what are we to say that these things didn't happen and that they are all wrong. These people were the closest things that we had to see what actually happened and what Jesus did we can't really degrade
